Therapy for Teens

Being a teenager can be complicated. Between school pressure, friendships, family relationships, social media, changing expectations, and the process of figuring out who they are, teens can sometimes feel overwhelmed by emotions they don't yet know how to manage. This can be especially challenging for teens who have experienced trauma, attachment wounds, divorce, or other significant changes in their lives. If you've noticed your teen becoming more withdrawn, anxious, irritable, overwhelmed, or disconnected, you may be wondering how to help. Therapy can provide a safe, supportive space where your teenager can talk openly, feel understood, and develop the skills to navigate life's challenges with greater confidence.

A Space Where Teens Can Be Themselves

One of the most important parts of therapy for teens is creating a relationship where they feel understood rather than judged. Research consistently highlights the therapeutic relationship (the connection and sense of trust between therapist and client) as one of the strongest predictors of positive therapy outcomes. For teens especially, feeling safe, respected, and genuinely understood can make all the difference.

I especially enjoy working with teens who have experienced trauma, divorce, or other relational disruptions, as well as teens who struggle with emotional regulation and anxiety. I also frequently work with teens who have had previous experiences with therapy that didn't feel like the right fit. Beginning therapy again can feel vulnerable, and my goal is to meet each teen where they are and give the relationship time to develop at a pace that feels comfortable for them.

In therapy, we work together to understand what's getting in the way of your teen feeling their best and develop practical tools for managing emotions, relationships, stress, and everyday challenges. My goal isn't to tell your teen what to do. It's to help them develop greater self-awareness, resilience, confidence, and skills so they can handle challenges both now and in the future.

Supporting Parents Along the Way

When your teenager is struggling, it can be difficult for parents to know what to say or do. You may feel worried, frustrated, or unsure whether to step in or give your teen more space.

Parent involvement can be an extremely important part of the therapeutic process. When appropriate and with your teen's consent, I will schedule a parent session to help parents better understand what their teen may be experiencing and learn supportive ways to communicate, set boundaries, and strengthen their relationship while respecting your teen's need for privacy and independence.

Your Teen Doesn't Have to Navigate It Alone

Sometimes, having an objective and supportive person to talk to can make a meaningful difference. If your teen is struggling with anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, trauma symptoms, relationships, emotional regulation, or simply doesn't seem like themselves lately, therapy can give them a place to begin. Together, we can create a space where your teen feels safe enough to be themselves, understood in what they're experiencing, and supported as they build the skills and confidence to navigate life with greater resilience.
